INTRODUCTION
Your Desktop icons should occupy about 10 Meg or less of disk space.
Reason…every time you click a Desktop icon, open or close an application
or start/shutdown your computer, the icons and their contents must be refreshed.
More Megs means slow computer speed.
CHECK SPACE TAKEN BY DESKTOP ICONS
Hold the Ctrl key down and click each icon on your Desktop > right-click
any icon and select Properties. There is displayed the number of
icons and the size of the lot. If the size is greater than 10 Meg,
right-click each icon one-by-one and record each one that exceeds about
10 K.
CREATE A STORAGE ICON ON A DRIVE
Open My Computer > click the Folders icon (creates 2 windows) > in
the left window, click a drive letter (probably C:) > in the right window,
right-click a blank area and select New + Folder > name the folder Desktop
Icons.
MOVE LARGE ICONS OFF THE DESKTOP
Restore My Computer (make smaller) and scroll as necessary to make
the Desktop Icons folder visible (Desktop icons should be visible).
Hold the Ctrl key and click the large icons > right-click one of the selected
icons and drag to the Desktop Icons folder (it should turn blue) > release
the right mouse button and select Move. If necessary, move My Computer
and repeat for other icons.
CREATE SHORTCUTS OF MOVED ICONS
Maximize My Computer > in left window, click the Desktop Icons folder
(makes all moved icons visible in right window) > one-by-one, right-click
icons (in right window) and select Send To + Desktop Create Shortcut.
Hopefully, the original icon pictures will appear on the new Desktop shortcuts.
CONCLUSION
If your Desktop was as overloaded as mine was, this procedure will
increase computer speed considerably.
