NEAT TRICKS 249
PHOTOSHOP - SELECT | COLOR | MOVE LAYER

INTRODUCTION
Here we will download and open a picture in Photoshop Elements.  An object will be selected and colored.  A duplicate layer will be made and the object moved.  The picture, “bouquet” can be downloaded from HERE (assumes this lesson is viewed on the Web).

COPY PICTURE FROM WEB TO PHOTOSHOP ELEMENTS
When viewing “bouquet” on the Web, right-click the picture + Copy Image.  Open Photoshop Elements and click the New icon > accept the defaults > click OK > click Edit + Paste (the image appears) > double-click the Hand tool (enlarged image is displayed).

SELECT OBJECT
Click the Zoom tool > draw a rectangle around one of the buds > select the Magic Wand tool > click the Add To Selection icon > set Tolerance=30 > click on the bud until the selection line is around the outer edge.  If a click causes the selection to go beyond the bud, click the Step Backwards button.  The Selection Brush tool can be used to “fine tune” the selection.  Hold the Alt key to erase outside areas and merely click to push the selection outward.  Change the size if necessary.

MAKE A DUPLICATE LAYER
In the Layers palette, click More + Duplicate Layer + OK.  Click title of the new layer (makes the new layer the active layer).

COLOR THE SELECTED OBJECT
Click Enhance + Adjust Color + Hue & Saturation > move the Hue slider to obtain a nice purple or blue color > click OK.  Leave the selection (marching ants) for the next step.

MAKE ANOTHER DUPLICATE LAYER
In the Layers palette, click More + Duplicate Layer + OK.  Click title of the new layer (makes the new layer the active layer).

MAKE THE MOVE
Select the Move Tool > drag the selected bud to the top of an empty branch.  It is now OK to remove the selection (marching ants).  To do this, hold Ctrl and press the D key.

PLAY WITH VISIBILITY (EYES)
On the Palette, click various eyes.  Note that by turning the middle eye on and off the color of the original bud changes.

CONCLUSION
You have had experience in selection, changing color, moving and layers.  One or more of these will be used in almost all of your creative projects.
