PHOTOSHOP ELEMENTS – SELECT WITH LASSO TOOL

INTRODUCTION
When selecting with the Lasso Tool, a straight line is selected between the start and end points providing that Add To Selection is selected in the Options Toolbar.  This lesson is found at: http://leisurevillage.us/nt/nt262.html.
 
COPY THE IMAGES ONTO THE DESKTOP
From your browser, view this lesson and click nt262a.jpg to bring up the first image.  While viewing the image, click the Restore icon (upper right of browser) and resize and move the browser so that you can view the image and a blank area of the Desktop.  Click the image and drag it onto a blank spot on the Desktop.  Repeat for nt262b.jpg.

OPEN PHOTOSHOP ELEMENTS AND PASTE THE IMAGE
Click (or double click) the Photoshop Elements icon on the Desktop.  If the Welcome screen is visible, close it.  Restore Photoshop Elements if necessary to provide a view of the Desktop.  Click 262a.jpg (on the Desktop) and drag onto the Photoshop Elements work area.
Click Ctrl + 0 (the zero key) to maximize the image.

SELECT THE LEFT SMOKESTACK
Open the Lasso selection tool > select Add To Selection (on the Options Toolbar) > click and hold the left mouse button as you drag from the lower left edge to the upper left edge below the irregular top (the path should wander near the right edge as it is drawn upward) > release the mouse button at the upper left edge.  Repeat for selection of the right edge of the stack.  Select the Zoom tool and draw a rectangle around the irregular top part of the smokestack.  Continue selecting the various straight lines around the top.  Scroll down the stack and if any selection lines are inside and not on the outer edge, draw a rough loop around them and they will be eliminated or moved to the edge.

REPEAT BY SELECTING THE RIGHT SMOKESTACK

ENHANCE THE BACKGROUND
Click Select (on the Menu Bar) + Inverse (this selects everything EXCEPT the smokestacks).  Click Enhance + Adjust Color + Hue/Saturation.  Play with the sliders to produce a very blue sky.  Close this picture and do not save.

OPEN THE OTHER PICTURE
Click 262b.jpg (on the Desktop) and drag onto the Photoshop Elements work area.  Click Ctrl + 0 (the zero key) to maximize the image.

SELECT THE WINDOWS
Use the same procedure, using the Lasso Tool, to select around both windows.  Be sure to draw a line that approaches the opposite side as you go from bottom to top or left to right etc.

ENHANCE THE WINDOWS
Click Enhance + Adjust Color + Hue/Saturation.  Play with the sliders to produce a very blue window color.  Close this picture and do not save.

CONCLUSION
The Lasso Selection Tool is only one of 6 selection tools but it is best for selecting straight lines.
