PHOTOSHOP ELEMENTS – OUTLINE ANYTHING

INTRODUCTION
It is possible to create an outline around any selected shape or object.

COPY THE IMAGE ONTO THE DESKTOP
From your browser, view this lesson and click 264.jpg to bring up the first image.  While viewing the image, click the Restore icon (upper right of browser) and resize and move the browser so that you can view the image and a blank area of the Desktop.  Click the image and drag it onto a blank spot on the Desktop > click Yes.

OPEN PHOTOSHOP ELEMENTS AND PASTE THE IMAGE
Click (or double click) the Photoshop Elements icon on the Desktop.  If the Welcome screen is visible, close it.  Restore Photoshop Elements if necessary to provide a view of the Desktop.  Click 264.jpg (on the Desktop) and drag onto the Photoshop Elements work area.  Maximize Photoshop Elements.  Click Ctrl + 0 (the zero key) to maximize the image.

SELECT THE AREA AROUND THE AIRPLANE AND CREATE A BORDER AROUND IT
Select the Magic Wand selection tool from the Tools Bar > click anywhere in the sky (everything except the airplane is selected) > click Select + Modify + Border (on the Menu bar) > set Size: 2 + OK.

COLOR THE BORDER
Select a black background color on the Tools Bar > use the Zoom Tool to enlarge the picture > use the Paint Bucket Tool to fill the border with black (it may be necessary to scroll around to get all parts of the border.  Ctrl + D will remove the selection lines.

MAKE A THIN LINE SHAPE FILLED WITH COLOR
Close the airplane > do not save.  Select the New button (on the Shortcuts toolbar) > accept the defaults > press Ctrl + 0 to expand > select the Lasso tool > draw a freehand irregular shape that returns to the starting point > click Select + Modify + Border > set Size: 5 + OK > select any color for the  foreground color > use the Paint Bucket Tool to fill the created border > click Ctrl + D to remove the selection lines > choose a different background color > select the Paint Bucket Tool > click the center of the figure (fills with the new color).

CONCLUSIONS
This procedure can be used on many pictures or objects to add a defining edge or create your own outlined shape.  You can experiment with Select + Modify + Expand or Contract as another way to create a border around your pictures.
