NEAT TRICKS 272

PHOTOSHOP ELEMENTS – JAGGED PICTURE FRAME

INTRODUCTION
In this lesson we’ll paint a jagged outside picture frame and use the Rectangular Marquee Tool and Stroke to create a decorative frame-in-frame.

DOWNLOAD AN EXAMPLE PICTURE
Open your browser and navigate to this lesson.  Click HERE to view picture 261 >  restore your browser and move to reveal part of the Desktop > drag the picture onto the Desktop > click Yes.  Open Photoshop Elements > close the Welcome screen > maximize Photoshop Elements > hold the Ctrl key and click the O key (Open) > navigate to the Desktop > select 261.jpg + Open.  Close all palettes except Layers (open if necessary by clicking Window + Layers.  If the Layers palette is attached at the top, click and drag the little rectangle below the title bar.  The rectangle is located left of the L in Layers).

MAKE A JAGGED FRAME
Click Create a new layer (bottom of Layers Palette) > with the new Layer 1 active, hold the Ctrl key and tap the #0 key (enlarges the picture) > make the foreground color black > select the Brush tool > click the brush selector (down arrow right of the brush name field) > click the brush table selector (right arrow right of brush selector) > choose Small List > select 100 Rough Round Bristle (or any non-uniform brush) > make Size: 50, Opacity: 100% > drag brush around outer edge of picture. (If necessary, clean up with Eraser tool)

CREATE DECORATIVE FRAME-IN-FRAME
Create a new layer (Layer 2) > select the Rectangular Marquee tool > drag a rectangle near the outer edge of the picture > use Arrow keys to equalize the rectangle’s spacing    > click Edit + Stroke > click the color patch and use the Eyedropper to pick up the ground color > set Size = 3, select Center, click OK > press Ctrl + D (deselect).

CHANGE JAGGED FRAME COLOR
Click the Layer 1 title (makes this the active layer) > press the X key (transposes background/foreground colors) > select the Paint Bucket tool > click in the black frame (turns the jagged frame white).

CONCLUSIONS
Some pictures look better with a white jagged frame – some with black.  Try making the decorative frame with different colors picked up from within the picture.
