PHOTOSHOP ELEMENTS REFLECTION LAYER
INTRODUCTION
Here we will use layers to create a wavy reflection of an image beneath
the original.
CREATE A FOLDER FOR THIS PROJECT
Right-click a blank area on the Desktop > click New + Folder > Name:
281 > press the Enter key.
DOWNLOAD PICTURE
Open Internet Explorer and go to bzus.com > click the Neat Tricks
icon (near upper right) > choose lesson 281 > click SNAIL
> right-click picture + Save Picture As > Save to: 281 folder (located
on the Desktop) > click Save.
OPEN PHOTOSHOP ELEMENTS AND CREATE A BLANK SHEET
Open Photoshop Elements > click the New icon (upper left) > set height
to 14 and width to 11inches, Contents White, Resolution 72 and Name Background
> click OK. It is necessary to have the Layers Palette open.
Close all other palettes.
OPEN SNAIL AND MOVE TO BACKGROUND
Click the Open icon (upper left) > find the 281 folder on Desktop >
select Snail + Open. Click the Move tool (top of Tools bar) > click
anywhere on Snail and drag to Background > drag Snail to the top of Background
> right-click the name and rename it Snail.
CREATE A DUPLICATE OF SNAIL
Click anywhere on the original Snail and drag to below Snail on the
Background > right-click the name and rename it Reflection > press Enter.
On the Layers Palette, drag the name Reflection below the name Snail.
RENDER THE REFLECTION LAYER
On the Layers palette, click the name Reflection (this makes it active)
> click Image + Rotate + Flip Layer Vertical. Select Filter
+ Distort + Waves… Set # Generations=2, Wavelength 10-50, Amplitude
5-10, Scale 100-100, move bottom slider to center > click OK. Click
Enhance + Brightness and Contrast + Brightness/Contrast > move brightness
to –35 and contrast to –10 > click OK.
PUT IT ALL TOGETHER
Click the Move tool > move Reflections up to produce a clean line of
separation. Select Snail and click Enhance + Auto Levels. Select
the Crop tool > set Height=7 and Width=5. Make a crop that allows
more space in front of snail and includes the snail reflection. Save
with Ctrl + Shift + S and quality 12 with the name My Snail. Compare
your snail to Final. Now, select
Reflection and repeat Waves with your own settings and compare with Final.
CONCLUSION
This is an application of Layers to change and hopefully enhance a
picture.
