PHOTOSHOP ELEMENTS 6 – ADJUSTMENTS

INTRODUCTION
PE6’s Full Edit includes about 6 Adjustments filters.  Open PE6 and select EDIT from the Welcome screen.  Click Full (below the orange EDIT tab).

OPEN A PICTURE
Hold the Ctrl key and tap the letter O key > find the folder that has pictures > double-click the folder to view the pictures inside > click the View Menu icon and select Thumbnail or Medium Icon view > select a picture and click Open.

EQUALIZE
Select Filters + Adjustments + Equalize.  The Equalize command redistributes the brightness values of the pixels in an image so that they more evenly represent the entire range of brightness levels.  View the results and click the Undo button.

GRADIENT MAP
Select Filters + Adjustments + Gradient Map… > click the “Click to open Gradient picker” button (down arrow located on right edge of colored rectangle) > select each of the 15 gradients and observe the results (notice that if the image becomes a solid color, this is the foreground color on the bottom of the Tools bar) > click Cancel.

INVERT
Select Filters + Adjustments + Invert > view the results (the colors are inverted and appear like a color film negative) > click the Undo button.  A shortcut for Invert is Ctrl + I.

POSTERIZE
Select Filters + Adjustments + Posterize > in the levels box, type numbers alternately from 1 to 10 and observe the results (moving the slider gives too drastic a change) > click Cancel.

THRESHOLD
The Threshold filter converts grayscale or color images into high-contrast, black-and-white images.  Select Filters + Adjustments + Threshold > move the slider and observe the resulting image > click Cancel.

PHOTO FILTER
The Photo Filter changes the image as if it had been shot with the selected filter in front of the lens.  Select Filters + Adjustments + Photo Filter > in the drop down menu try each of the 20 filters (note that the color square represents the filter color) > click Cancel.

CONCLUSION
These easy to use filters can make a drastic change in the original image – hopefully an improvement in the artistic quality.
