PHOTOSHOP ELEMENTS 6 – SELECTION TO LAYER
INTRODUCTION
Photoshop Elements 6 has several good selection tools. After
selecting a portion of a picture, the selection can be moved to the background,
making it a separate layer. The Layers palette must be visible for
this procedure.
OPEN A BACKGROUND PICTURE
Hold the Ctrl key and tap the letter O key > find the folder that has
pictures > double-click the folder to view the pictures inside > click
the View Menu icon and select Thumbnail or Medium Icon view > select a
picture such as a landscape and click Open.
OPEN A PICTURE OF AN OBJECT
Repeat above procedure and pick an object or person.
SELECT AREA TO BE MOVED
Tap the “A” key to select the Quick Selection Tool > select the area
to be converted (or all area not to be converted and inverse the selection
later) > click-click-click to select (hold Alt and click to deselect areas
that are not wanted in the selection). If necessary, use the Zoom
tool and enlarge the picture > progress around the edge to finely select
and deselect. If the background is selected, click Select + Inverse.
MOVE SELECTED OBJECT ONTO THE BACKGROUND LAYER
Tap the V key to select the Move tool > drag the selection onto the
Background layer > move the new layer to expose a corner of the selection
box > hold the Alt key and drag the corner square in (or out) to correctly
size the object > release Alt key and drag object into position > click
the green checkmark to complete the crop and move. Close the original
object & do not save.
OPEN A SECOND OBJECT
Open a second object and repeat the above 2 procedures.
CONCLUSION
Photoshop Elements 6 makes it easy to select an object. A selected
object is then dragged onto the Background layer to form a new layer.
Any number of selections can be included. It’s a good idea to resize,
if necessary, to keep all pictures close to the same size before beginning
the process.
