PHOTOSHOP ELEMENTS – ADJUSTMENT LAYERS1

INTRODUCTION
Adjustment layers come with a mask that allows control of the area being adjusted.  Several adjustments can be made to various areas of a picture.

OPEN A PICTURE AND SELECT THE SKY
Open Photoshop Elements in the Full Edit mode.  Click File + Open (or hold the Ctrl key and tap the letter O key) > select a picture such as a landscape with a bland sky > click Open (becomes Background on the Layers palette) > select the Magic Wand selection tool > click around in the sky to select only the sky (if necessary, fine tune with the Zoom Tool and the Quick Selection Tool).

PUT CLOUDS IN THE SKY
Change the Foreground color to sky blue (on the Tools Bar) > click Filter + Render + Clouds.

ADJUST COLOR OF SKY
Select “Create adjustment layer” (top of Layers palette) + Photo Filter > select the Deep Blue filter > move the Density slider for best color > click OK.

PREPARE TO ADJUST THE SCENE BELOW THE SKY
Select Background (on the Layers palette) > select “Create adjustment layer” (top of Layers palette) + Hue/Saturation > click OK.  (Now we want to copy the Layer Mask picture from the sky and past it in the background mask.  Once copied it must be inverted to hide the sky and reveal the scene.)  Hold the Alt key and click the Photo Filter mask > click Select + All (or Ctrl + A) > click Edit + Copy (or Ctrl + C) > click the Hue/Saturation mask > click Edit + Paste (or Ctrl +V) > click Filter + Adjustments + Inverse (or Ctrl + I).

ADJUST HUE/SATURATION OF SCENE BELOW THE SKY
Double click the Hugh/Saturation adjustment layer control (box on left side of palette) > move sliders for best results.

CONCLUSION
Preview before/after by selecting the first item in the Undo History palette and the last item.
The advantage of using the layer mask is that it is always possible to go back and readjust.  This is unlike the clouds put in the sky which can not be readjusted.  Any or all of the layer masks can be applied to any part of a picture – merely paint unaffected areas black.
