INTRODUCTION
Photoshop Elements makes it easy to replace heads in a group shot.
TAKE PICTURES
Take 2 or more pictures of a group from the same camera angle and with
the same lighting and camera settings.
UPLOAD PICTURES TO A FOLDER
Upload the group pictures to a folder that you can find later.
OPEN PICTURES
Open Photoshop Elements. Hold the Ctrl key and tap the letter
O (or File + Open). Navigate to the folder that holds the group
photos, select them all (hold the Ctrl key and click the photo files),
click Open. If the pictures don’t appear in the Project Bin, click
“Show Project Bin” (at lower left corner of Editor screen). The group pictures
will appear in the Project Bin.
BEGIN THE PHOTOMERGE PROCESS
Select 2 of the group pictures in the Project Bin. Click File
+ New + Photomerge Faces. If necessary, click the Align button +
Auto Align. The pictures will be aligned and one will be placed in the
Source window. Drag the other picture into the Final window.
REPLACE FACES (2 PICTURES)
Select the Pencil tool and click a dot on the good face found in the
Source picture. That’s it. Click Done and the final picture
is opened in the Editor for fixing and saving.
REPLACE FACES (3 OR MORE PICTURES)
After following the 2 pictures procedure, select the newly fixed picture
and one more picture and repeat the photomerge process.
REMOVE PEOPLE OR THINGS FROM FIXED OBJECT
This same procedure works for several pictures taken of a place with
unwanted moving people or vehicles in the way. Choose Photomerge Group
Shot instead of Photomerge Faces. Use the pencil to zigzag in the
wanted area of the Source to replace object in the Final picture.
Alignment of the Source and Final pictures is automatic.
CONCLUSION
This may be one feature that is more easily done in Photoshop Elements
than in Photoshop. When taking pictures of fixed people or groups,
always take more than one shot. Someone is sure to have his/her eyes
closed or be moving or something. The group shot fix can also be
used in place of the face fix. Now multiple shots of a building,
art object, etc. (from a fixed camera position) can be photomerged to remove
unwanted people or things that might be moving in front. Use Photomerge
Groups for this.
