PHOTOSHOP ELEMENTS – BLACK & WHITE

INTRODUCTION
Here we’ll use two methods to change a picture from RGB color to black & white.

OPEN PHOTOSHOP ELEMENTS
Open Photoshop Elements in the Full Edit mode.

OPEN A PICTURE
Hold the Ctrl key and tap the letter O key (open) > select a landscape picture > click Open.

ENHANCE METHOD
Click Enhance + Convert to Black and White > select each of the 6 styles.  Note the After picture and the positions of the Red, Green, Blue sliders.  The slider positions range from –200 to +200 and can be read by resting the mouse pointer on the slider.  You can make slight adjustments to each slider but it’s hard to improve on the presets.  Click Cancel.

HUE/SATURATION METHOD (BLACK & WHITE)
On the Layers Palette, click the Create adjustment layer icon (white/black ball) > select Hue/Saturation > for Edit: select Master > move the Saturation slider all the way to the left (removes all color) > click OK.  Click Undo to return the original.

HUE/SATURATION METHOD (WITH ONE COLOR)
On the Layers Palette, click the Create adjustment layer icon (white/black ball) > select Hue/Saturation > for Edit: select Red > move the Saturation slider to the right to pick up a bit more red > for Edit: select each of the other 5 colors and move the Saturation slider all the way to the left.  Return to Edit: select Red and make final adjustments.  Click Cancel and repeat, replacing Red with each of the other 5 colors.

CONCLUSION
The ENHANCE method should be used for the best “totally” black and white.  The HUE/SATURATION (BLACK & WHITE) method is probably not as good as ENHANCE.  HUE/SATURATION METHOD (WITH ONE COLOR) does not work on a picture that is already converted to black & white.  The HUE/SATURATION METHOD (WITH ONE COLOR) can be used effectively to add color to one part of a black & white picture.  If time permits, try each color to find the one that gives the greatest “snap” to your creation.  It is possible to select all except an object in the picture and convert the selected areas to black & white.  Sometimes this is better than the HUE/SATURATION METHOD (WITH ONE COLOR).
