PHOTOSHOP ELEMENTS – ADD INTEREST IN PIX
INTRODUCTION
Here we’ll add a shaded frame around an interesting subject and turn
the background black & white.
OPEN PHOTOSHOP ELEMENTS
Open Photoshop Elements in the Full Edit mode.
OPEN A PICTURE
Hold the Ctrl key and tap the letter O key (open) > select a picture
> click Open.
DRAW A FRAME AROUND THE SUBJECT
Tap the M key (Marquee Tool) > draw a rectangle or ellipse around the
subject (place the mouse pointer above and to the left of the subject,
hold the left mouse button and drag to below and to the right of the subject).
To make a change, press the Esc key and try again.
CONVERT THE FRAMED SUBJECT INTO A LAYER
Hold the Ctrl key and tap the J key (or click Layer + New + Layer via
Copy). This converts the selection to a new layer.
ADD A SHADOW
With the new layer selected, click Layer Styles (under Effects) + Simple
Emboss + Apply > click the icon on the right side of the new layer (Style
Settings) > play with the sliders and settings until you’re satisfied >
click OK.
REMOVE COLOR FROM THE BACKGROUND
Select the Background layer > click the “Create adjustment layer” icon
on the top of the Layers palette (black/white ball) > select Hue/Saturation
> move the Saturation slider all the way to the left (removes color) >
click OK.
CONCLUSION
This procedure is used to add interest to a certain part of a picture.
It is a great way to emphasize certain pictures of one or more adults or
kids where the background doesn’t add to the main subject. Try it
with both the Rectangular and the Elliptical Marquee Tools.
