PHOTOSHOP ELEMENTS – USE OF 3D TOOLS

INTRODUCTION
Before doing serious work with the 3D Transform feature of Photoshop Elements, it’s necessary to learn the use of the tools.

OPEN PHOTOSHOP ELEMENTS AND CREATE A BLANK LAYER
Open Photoshop Elements in the Full Edit mode.  Hold the Ctrl key and tap the letter N key (New blank file) > set Width: 1200 pixels, Height: 800 pixels, Resolution: 300, Color Mode: RGB Color, Background: white > click OK.

VISIT 3D TRANSFORM
Select Filter + Render + 3D Transform > select Options > set Resolution: and Anti- Aliasing both High (produces smoother texture), uncheck Display Background (makes 3D object edges more visible on original layer).

DRAW A CYLINDER
Click the Cylinder Tool > click and drag a cylinder (about 1/3 the height and 1/4 the width of the work area).

MOVE
Tap the V key (Selection Tool – black arrow) > click one of the small circles on the cylinder (anchor points) and drag or move the cylinder to the center.

RESIZE/RESHAPE
Tap the A key (Direct Selection Tool – white arrow) > click each of the anchor points on the cylinder and observe the effects of moving it in/out/up/down.

ADD/DELETE/CONVERT ANCHOR POINTS
Press the + key (Add Anchor Point Tool) and click right side of cylinder (adds anchor point) > tap A and move the new anchor point in/out > select the Convert Anchor Point Tool (looks like a tilted inverted V) >  click and drag the new anchor point up or down > tap A and move to see effects > tap the – key (Delete Anchor Point Tool) > click the new anchor point (deletes it).  Note:  these tools do not work on the original anchor points.

ROTATE THE CYLINDER
Click the R key (Trackball Tool) > click and drag the cylinder up/down and around.  When most of the exposed surface is shaded, click OK to finalize your creation.

CONCLUSION
All anchor points must be added on the right side.  Anchor points can not be added to or removed from square or spherical objects.  The ultimate use of a 3D cylinder is construction of a bottle with text and label wrapped around in a realistic manner.   Only new anchor points that you add can be deleted or moved.
