PHOTOSHOP ELEMENTS – 3D BOOK
INTRODUCTION
Here you create a book cover and then render the cover into a 3D book.
OPEN PHOTOSHOP ELEMENTS AND CREATE A BOOK COVER
CREATE A BACKGROUND LAYER: Open Photoshop Elements in the Full Edit
mode. Hold the Ctrl key and tap the letter N key (New Blank File)
> set size 14” High, 11” Wide, Resolution 72, Color Mode: RGB color, Color:
White > press OK > press Ctrl + number 0 to enlarge the layer view.
CREATE DUPLICATE LAYER (TO BE USED LATER)
Click Layer + Duplicate Layer > type Name: 3D > OK. Click Background
layer (select).
ADD A PICTURE: Hold the Ctrl key and press the letter O (Open) > navigate
to a pictures folder and click a picture + Open > press the V key (Move)
and move the picture onto the Background layer > drag the corners in and
resize to fit the cover (if drag squares are off screen, hold Ctrl and
tap the number 0) > move to center > press Enter. Close the picture.
ADD TEXT: Select the Text Tool > select a foreground color (text color)
> click Set The Text Color box (at top) > click eyedropper on foreground
color > select a Font (face and size) > type first line of title > type
V (Move Tool) > resize and position the text > select Effects + Bevels
> choose bevel + click Apply > repeat for each additional line of text.
FLATTEN LAYERS: Select Layer + Flatten Image.
CREATE A 3D BOOK SHAPE
SELECT 3D LAYER: Click the 3D layer (select).
CREATE 3D SHAPE: Click Filter + Render + 3D Transform > select Options
and uncheck Display Background > select the Cube Tool > draw a wide tall
rectangle > press A (Direct Selection Tool) > drag the lower right corner
in and up to form a book shape (press Cancel and start over if shape is
wrong) > type R (Track Ball Tool) > drag the shape completely around and
stop at best “book” position > use E (Pan Camera Tool) if necessary to
reposition > press OK.
MOVE COVER LAYER TO 3D BOOK SHAPE
Select the Cover Layer > press V (Move Tool) > drag the Cover Layer
onto the 3D Book Layer > close the Cover Layer > hold Ctrl + tap the number
0 key (makes all move corners visible) > drag corners in until the cover
is about the same size as the 3D Book.
DISTORT THE COVER TO FIT THE 3D BOOK
With the Cover layer and the Move Tool selected > hold Ctrl while you
drag the corners of the cover onto the corners of the 3D Book > press Enter
to complete the process.
CONCLUSION
You can further enhance your 3D book by adding shadows, changing color
of background, adding texture to simulate page edges, etc…
