PHOTOSHOP ELEMENTS – MIRROR BOX EFFECT
INTRODUCTION
Here you make a picture appear as though it is inside a box with mirrored
sides. We thank Gavin Hoey for this lesson (see his Web address below).
OPEN PHOTOSHOP ELEMENTS AND LOAD A PICTURE
Open Photoshop Elements in the Full Edit mode. Hold the Ctrl
key and tap the letter O key (Open) > navigate to a pictures folder and
click a picture + Open > click Open.
ADD 4 DUPLICATE LAYERS
Click Layer + Duplicate Layer > repeat 3 more times (you now have 5
layers).
ADD CANVAS
Select the original Background layer > click Image + Resize + Canvas
Size > change New Size Width & Height to Percent = 50 > Canvas Color
= White > Relative should be checked > click OK > hold Ctrl and click the
number 0 (see all).
CREATE MIRRORED SIDES
Select the first Background Copy > select the Move Tool > drag the
big picture to the right until the moving left edge matches the right edge
of the Background > press Ctrl + 0 to view all > select Image + Rotate
+ Flip Layer Horizontal > hold Ctrl and drag both right-hand corners of
the moving layer to the right-hand corners of the canvas. Repeat
this for the other 3 layers using a “Flip Layer Vertical” for the top and
bottom sides.
ADD SHADOW EFFECT
Select the left “mirrored” side > click Enhance + Adjust Lighting +
Brightness and Contrast > reduce brightness to –100 > click OK > select
the right “mirrored” side and repeat but increase brightness to + 50.
CONCLUSION
This is a neat way to create an unusual view of a picture. Slight
misalignment errors can be easily fixed by selecting the layer and holding
Ctrl as you reposition the corners.
